Lindy Kowalczyk started the January 23 Floral Design Workshop as she always does: reviewing the principles of design and elements of design before moving on to discussing the requirements for creating an underwater floral design according to the National Garden Clubs Flower Show Handbook. The photo shows Lindy holding up a poster of the principles and elements of design with assistance from member Sharon Lewis.
Next Lindy showed a group of flowers she had wired together in a pleasing formation, and she illustrated that adding flowers to the designer’s vessel requires patience and use of mechanics to keep the flowers and greens from floating. She showed how the designer can put together the design prior to inserting it into the vessel. And she emphasized that adding distilled water is the last step in the creation of an underwater floral design. Lindy also showed that underwater designs may have part of the design underwater and part of the design above the water.
Next the participants in the workshop got to work. CGC members attending were Sharon Lewis, Monique Doyle, Jenn Ferrier, Sara Wolf, Sue Oldershaw, Laura Furlong, Elizabeth Papagiannis, Bonnie Colman and Marianne Foley. Bonnie and Marianne, along with Lindy, assisted the other members with their designs as they worked.
Thanks to Laura Furlong for the photos.
